Ancient Tihuanaco
Today we continue with acclimatisation on a short trip from La Paz to a place where one of the first South American cultures was born...
At 8 a.m. we start in La Paz on an old bus. We never thought it would make it but finally after passing nice scenery including the mountain giants Illimani, Huayna Potosi, Condoiriri, Ancohuma and Illampu we got to the Tihuanaco ruins.
Tuhuanaco culture lived here from 2500 B.C. until 1200 B.C. when a long period of drought forced the people to leave this area to the east and south. They lived in total harmony with their environment. Mountains, earth, rivers, lakes and animals represented gods in their religion. They believed in 3 Worlds: Heaven, symbolised by the condor, Earth represented by the puma and Hell represented by the snake.
After the ruins we visited two museums; one with ancient monoliths and sculptures and the second with ceramics. Afterwards we had a nice lunch at a local restaurant and had the option between a lama steak or fish. Both dishes were fantastic!
Now we are back in La Paz preparing for tomorrows journey to the National Park Sajama. There we will stay for 2 weeks and climb Parinacota and Sajama. And of course we will enjoy the natural hot springs ;)
We will write you some more news and send some pictures within two weeks.
Greetings from La Paz,
Team Ski Cordillera 2006
