ABOUT THE EXPEDITION
It is still possible to find unknown or rarely visited areas In South America . We already realized this during our small expedition Ski Cordillera 2004.
This time we decided to visit Bolivia - our target this time is National Park Sajama in Cordillera Occidental and Cordillera Apolobamba.
Sajama is the highest peak in Bolivia being a fundamental element in the culture and mythology of the Aymara nation. With it’s snow covered slopes it is also the dream of every ski mountaineer who ever got to this area and could see Sajama.
Cordillera Apolobamba is a rarely visited mountain range. People living in this territory follow the same way of life as some hundreds years ago very close to the nature. It is a land of condors, lamas, legends and sounds of whistles...
The mountains in Cordillera Apolobamba are similar to the Alps and the near Amazon basin provides enough snowfall. This will allow us ascends to the peaks and also skiing on the slopes. No relevant mountaineering maps of this are exist and the eastern slopes on the Amazon side are unsettled and almost unexplored. Only help to us are fragment of English maps from the beginning of the last century and some sketches that we can not really rely on. We hope to help future visitors of Apolobamba with GPS coordinates, possible routes and camp descriptions.
GOALS OF THE EXPEDITION:
The expedition has numerous goals in the area of mountaineering, ski touring, culture understanding and education:
- To climb and ski down several eminent mountains in the area of Cordillera Occidental in Bolivia. Many of these mountains have an important role in the culture and mythology of the Incas and Aymaras. They were back then considered Sacred Mountains.
- To explore the rarely visited mountain range Cordillera Apalobamba on boarder with Peru. Here we will make several first climbs and descends on the low explored east slopes of the mountain range which declines to the Amazon basin.
- To learn more about the mentality, way of life, traditions and values in the isolated mountain communities living in the mountain areas in the harmony with the nature.
- Via mass media, presentations, lectures and our web page we want to share the knowledge about the cultures and sacred mountains with the general public. This way we want to emphasize the importance of nature, outdoor activities and preservation of natural environment we all are a part of.
PLANNED ACCENDS:
Sajama (6542m) - the highest mountain of Bolivia a sacred mountain of Aymara in the national park Sajama on the boarder with Chile.
Parinacota (6323m) - first ski descent on the steep western slope of this sacred mountain. We skied down Pomerape, the twin of Parinacota in 2004.
Acotango (6052m) - historical first ski descent of the rarely visited volcano on the Bolivian-Chile boarder.
Cordillera Apalobamba - During the expedition we will climb several peaks of this isolated mountain range. This mountain range is far from civilization and very poorly explored. Therefore this part of the expedition will be the most difficult one but also the most exciting one.
The plan now is to ski the highest peak of the mountain range Cordillera Apalobamba - Chaupi Orco (6044m) and the peaks Annaena (5853m), Callijon (5827m) and several more mountains in the range. The concrete plan will depend from local conditions and will be done on the spot.
